Storm 31 Dec 2006
Exceptionally severe thunderstorm and hailstorms hit Tuggeranong and Woden Valley on New Year’s Eve, 2006. Rain was incredibly heavy, with up to 100mm recorded in 1 hour. Hail up to the size of marbles piled up to depth of 1 metre in suburbs of Chisholm, Fadden and Theodore blocking drains and causing local flash flooding.
Drains were blocked with hail, excessive water and debris, meaning floodwaters and mud ended up flooding many homes. Mudslides blocked the Monaro Highway near the suburb of Calwell and the ACT SES received over 250 calls for assistance. Strong winds damaged some houses and brought down trees. Many fences and livestock in rural areas south of the city were lost.
